Completing the evaluation section of a grant application can be one of the most challenging tasks fundraisers face. Developing goals and metrics can feel like an exercise in science fiction writing rather than an evidence-informed process, especially for new programs or initiatives. What does it look like to set goals and metrics for a new program or initiative? The word soup that often accompanies the evaluation section of RFPs makes matters worse: what’s the difference between a Theory of Change, Logic Model, and Theory of Action? Are “research,” “monitoring” and “evaluation” really different, or just names for the same thing? And most importantly, how can fundraisers make a compelling case without overpromising? The funded program or initiative needs to be able to collect, analyze, and report on the goals and metrics in the grant proposal, which requires close alignment between the design of the program and its goals, and strong internal data capacity. This session will share helpful resources and tips to use to prepare an evaluation section that aligns with the design of the program or initiative, establishes ambitious, yet realistic, goals, and is within the data collection capacity of the funded organization.
