Development Series: Navigating Power Dynamics in Fundraising

Development professionals regularly engage with organization supporters. Sometimes these interactions can become uncomfortable, offensive, even harmful. In this session we will discuss principles and practices to help address these situations in the moment, as well as follow-up strategies that create a culture of support and effectively escalate issues and concerns.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will…

  • Understand the power dynamics within the development profession and how they impact fundraisers.
  • Be provided a process for addressing difficult and inappropriate situations with donors in the moment including how to assess the situation, decide how to respond, and confidently execute that decision.
  • Discuss processes and policies that ensure effective follow up to these situations for addressing appropriately and getting ahead of future situations.

About the Speaker:
Laurel brings over 20 years of experience to her work with The Osborne Group. Laurel works closely with clients on topics including donor engagement, development operations, board development, and more. In addition to well-received workshops for national organizations, universities, and others, Laurel has presented at AFP ICON, CASE-NAIS, and AFP Congress. Prior to joining TOG, Laurel worked with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America where she coordinated capacity-building support to agencies across the country.
